i've recently been given a lot of disturbing information about people's preference for straight hair. i read, in an article about how we present ourselves on facebook, that when given a choice between two pics of the same person, one with curly hair and one with straight, something like 77% of people chose the pic with straight hair.

and the millionaire matchmaker {yes, i openly admit my tendency to fall victim to so many ridiculous tv shows} makes every single girl straighten her hair. apparently men want to see hair they can run their fingers through. lame.

i am a frizzy-haired brunette, who can decently pull off either look with the proper tools. but i've always preferred big texas hair. i die for the hot mess look.

i turned 25 on saturday. it was an amazing celebratory weekend. no emphasis on celebrating jordan, but a simple desire to celebrate the life i've been given.

my friends (whose blogs can and should be read here and here) came prepared with special bday questions.

question one: birthday girl asks everyone else what they were doing when they turned 25.

question two: others ask birthday girl what it has taken her 25 years to learn.

i got to hear a lot of fun stories about what my friends were doing in life when they were my age. and i got to think about some of the things i've been learning.

what has it taken me 25 years to learn?

it has taken me 25 years to learn just how intensely i am loved.

where i am today is drastically different from where i have ever been before. today i have so much love in my heart; love that has been received and love that is ready to be given.

i've had people comment on my over-use of the word "love" throughout my life. i love music. i love working out. i love my family. i love glitter. i love love. i love california. i love so many of my friends. i have been in love. i am in love...with coffee, beer, and baseball :) you get the picture. anyway, i'm learning that these expressions of love don't need to be restricted. the more love you can share with the world, the better. i have always been and will forever continue to be a giver of love.

and in this last year, i have grown in my ability to be a receiver of love. i quit running from the people who have loved me most. i quit running from the One who has loved me most. and in giving up this fight, i have discovered just how deeply this love flows.

so...24...it was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

and 25...i'm in love.

sometimes i feel frustrated because i find songs that...kind of move me. is that lame? that sounded really lame. anyway...i don't feel frustrated because of their effect on me; i feel frustrated because i don't know what to do with it. confused? me too.

lately i've been having some of those moments that cause me to stop, take a second, and say to myself, "this is your life." i hate to sound like one of those girls who uses her media opportunities to make her life sound like it's straight off the hills. i also hate when people try to prove to their onlookers that they have an amazing life, worthy of everyone's envy. so not what i'm going for. regardless, there are moments worth documenting, and this is my blog so...

i feel like my life is always moving so quickly. and because i am constantly on the go, i've found that i often have to consciously tell myself to be present in the moment. the way that people carry cameras with them to develop a picture of something great that they saw, i am trying to carry...a heart camera...so that i can capture the really great moments and feelings and moods that i get the pleasure of experiencing on this journey.

i'm not very good at taking pictures. well...anyone can whip out a camera and snap a photo. what i mean is, i'm not very good at taking those 20 seconds to create the memory. i tend to fly right through all of the great experiences. so...i'm going to try something new. my new mission is to take those 20 seconds to grab the camera that exists within, capture the moment, and create the memory.

warning: it is rare for this girl to go into detail on the discoveries of her heart and life (either because i'm afraid of being vulnerable or because i know that most people do not really care enough to read SO many words) but...it seems that anything less, at least for this one week, would just be faking. so here goes...

so far, this week is a powerful whirlwind of smiles and tears, excitement and sadness, daydreaming and reflection.

the last year of my life has been one of tremendous...tremendousness. i can't even really choose good or bad. it's been a year of good. it's been a year of bad. ultimately, it has served as a pivotal moment in the life of jordan.

i feel so young relating the biggest things in my life to school, but honestly, my experience in grad school has been so intimately woven into every detail of my existence these last few years. and if you know me at all on a personal level, you know that my affection for school is...limited. so without giving it too much credit, i have to say that this year has saved me. and in spite of my rebellious tendencies toward my school and my own personal version of "the man," whom i have continually tried to "stick it to," i am more fully myself than i have ever been. all of the awful things that my wretched school put me through, actually kind of set me free.

you know when you have to force a child to do something that they are DREADING, but you tell them that it simply must be done? THEN much to the child's surprise, once they have succumb to the authority's hold on them, they find...it really wasn't that bad. perhaps even, kind of fun? ugh weird. anyway, i was that child, and now i am my own nanny saying- "SEE! that tantrum you threw back there was actually completely unwarranted."

it really wasn't that bad. perhaps even, kind of...fun?

i am walking away from this entire experience with
a greater awareness of myself than i have ever known,
with a few passions that really cannot be contained by life or the limitations put on my curious heart,
with lots of new friends and life teachers who have worn down the callouses of my heart,
and with the knowledge that everyday i am chosen.
(some days i am chosen by friends and boys and employers, but every single day, i am chosen by at least One)

and that seemingly short list of returns for my investment (of time and energy and money and vulnerability) has changed my life.

the sweat returns, my muscles quickly tire.

but i press on.

a fellow journeyman, who brings more hope than he will ever know.

and there it is.

i've reached the top.

i turn to see the view.

SOMETIMES...

...i catch myself reciting all the lines as i watch you've got mail.
...i miss tulsa. it's so quaint and easy to maneuver.
...i watch non-Christmas movies that happen to take place at Christmas time, just so i can enjoy the holiday spirit without feeling like a freak.
...i get really mad at myself for not knowing how to cook!
...i think about not wearing any nail polish. i never follow through.
...when i make a new playlist, i discover that it has the exact same songs as another playlist i've already put together.
...i start books and never finish them. okay wait...most of the time i do this.
...i'm afraid of my emails and voicemails, so i let them pile up until i finally force myself to go through them.
...i laugh at the girls who are wearing makeup at the gym.
...i think little kids should be kept awake all day and adults should get two hour naps in the afternoon.
...i get confused about which hobbies i'm supposed to appreciate from afar, and which i should attempt to adapt as my own.
...i cry simply because some songs are just really beautiful. i can usually handle this about myself, but when it happens in front of other people it makes me feel like a total dweeb.
...i like to wake up early to go have a yummy breakfast by myself.
...i feel like the bigger my hair is, the better my day is going to be.
...i wonder how it's so easy for me to choose an outfit, when the day before i tried on everything in my closet and nothing worked. one of life's many mysteries, i suppose.
...i try to be a tea person. i can only remember one weekend in my life when tea brought me as much joy as coffee has for so many years.

about a year ago, i received a text from my best friend {in the midst of one of my emotional crises, no doubt} that said,

"lol you care way too much about what people think. RELAX!"

and i saved it so that i can look back when i need to be reminded of this tendency of mine.

well...last night a received another tool of empowerment to assist me in this struggle...

this rad little kid, with his missing front teeth and awesome feather-like ponytail atop his head, became an inspiration of mine. when he and his party arrived at the game, he confidently walked up to his seat and began to enjoy, leaving the rest of the group behind as they stood and timidly configured a plan just for sitting down. he didn't need any help. he didn't want to sit and think through the effect his actions would have on everyone around him. he was just ready for the party to begin.

the phrase that comes to mind when i look at him is this:

"I DO WHAT I WANT!"

and while i think he might be just a bit more bold than most children his age, he does possess a quality that i fear has been stolen from me in my journey into adulthood.

of course as an adult this looks very different; i want to be considerate of others and i want to make good decisions for myself. i cannot simply walk through life saying, "I DO WHAT I WANT!" i think i know some people like this, and they aren't very fun to get close to.

all i'm saying is:

if i suddenly get the urge to go to a giants game with my hair in a tiny little ponytail above my face...

{i'm going to make everyone think it's this season's latest trend}

if i want to overcome my timidity and quit thinking so much about everything...

{i'm going to simply walk straight up to my seat and let the game begin}

and if by some horrible chance my two front teeth somehow get knocked out of my mouth, well...

i'm at aroma cafe hanging out with my dear friend amos lee. okay...in all honesty, he doesn't know that he is hanging out with me. i can't see him or touch him or smell him {and for a bit more honesty, i'm kind of okay with that}, but i can hear him. his sweet voice is serenading me as i wait in anticipation for the kickoff of the coming weekend. i've got the same 3 songs on repeat.

my cappuccino isn't very good today, but i'm trying to down it because i hate going into a friday night with the fear of playing the role of the sleeping beauty. although i wouldn't mind being woken up by a kiss from my prince. hee hee...sorry, had to go there.

here is an update on my vacation with mom and dad. yes, i consider it to have been a vacation for all of us. so lovely. sorry several pictures, but we did a lot that week!

umm...definitely my favorite winery ever!!

i'm just waiting on them to tell me when they'll be making the move. oh and squeezing my sister + her familia and my best friend in the back of the u-haul. hmm...a girl can dream.

it's their first trip to san franny, and i'm so excited to show them the city i've fallen in love with! they get in tonight, and this morning i have little time to sit and blog, relax with a double cappuccino and some great music. and i'll be spending the afternoon with my boy.

okay, i'm going to share with you a bit of my vision...

these are the things i love. i'm obsessed with the idea of merging these different styles to create one steady and consistent theme.

okay first of all we have the quilt. i love quilts. a fun cottagey feel...delight.

seriously digging the red lotus lamp. AND i like how it pairs with that super cute thing next to it!

i was talking with sarah a while back, and we were trying to figure out how to do this effectively. i mean...these things combined could equal one big, nasty mess. but with the right vision, and proper execution, it could equal home.

i do not want my home to just be a bunch of different things that i like, thrown into one little space. i want it to be a collection of things that represent a general mood, theme, and personality.

so here is the message i want my place to share {i think}:

i'm feminine and delicate {quilt, cottage style, flowers}
but i'm strong and independent; delicate does not equal fragile {the color red, animal print}

i have a wild side and love to have fun {different textures and patterns}
but that is paired with a constant and powerful vulnerability [powerful vulnerability...interesting oxymoron i use to describe my heart] and gentleness {soft throws, candles}

so...what are your thoughts? you girls are much better at this stuff than i am!

do you think that this could work? have you run into similar dilemmas? how do i approach this??

i'm thinking about what i want to do with my summer. i'm already loving my time off- way too much, in fact. i can already tell that august really is going to be a wicked month for me, as i will be forced to return to school. wait! wait! wait! i'm getting ahead of myself... the theme of this post is

today i'm thinking about my home.
not so much my current residence {still a depressing issue for me...hopefully mom will help me get it together in a week}, but the home i will someday have.

whether it will be my own personal space or the dwelling of a small and happy family, i'm still unsure.
however, i have tons of thoughts on the subject.

here are some of the things floating around in my head:

a light and breezy cottage on the beach, where we can watch the sun come up/go down from the porch every day.

a small tree house-esque fort, buried in the midst of a huge forest. full of adventure. and lots of windows for the sun to peak in through the trees.

a tiny, humble but sweet apartment, smack dab in the middle of a thriving metropolis {say san francisco or chicago, maybe?}

a vintage trailer on a big piece of land, perfect for watching the stars at night.

regardless of style or location, one word can be used to describe the feel of the home i hope to create:

quaint.

{okay two words, because some version of "small" also fits each description}

i cannot help thinking of candles and big cozy throws and antique globes and huge coffee mugs and a massive sofa that completely swallows its inhabitants. and thousands of twinkle lights. i think that a space covered in twinkle lights instantly becomes something more- a home. and rocking chairs. two. either for boy and girl, madly in love. or the lovebirds together, with kids in their laps. or visits from mom or dad or sister or niece. or for catching up with lifelong friends.

yes...i like those thoughts very much.

well...you may {or may not} have noticed that i have been somewhat out of the picture lately when it comes to blog life. turns out, when you neglect an entire semester of school, the last two weeks become infinitely valuable.

after many late nights in the city,

countless shots of espresso,

weeks of chipped nail polish,

30 pages of jordan's original thought,

and 2 fat exams,

i've hit my target.

summer.

freedom.

dun-zo.

in all honesty, the semester felt a bit like a routine on the uneven bars in gymnastics- i hopped on, did lots of spinning and turning and jumping and kicking, and somehow pulled off a pretty decent dismount. still awaiting the judges' scores though {aka my grades}. and for another moment of truth- i don't even care what the judges have to say. the semester took so much out of me {mentally, emotionally, spiritually} and i really feel like i have grown so much as an individual that my grades are just one element of the culmination of my Spring 2010 semester.

and today i slept until 9:45 {glorious}, took my sweet time getting ready, painted {okay, re-painted} my nails black {don't worry, it isn't mourning...it's sass...my toes are definitely fire engine red}, and am now sitting at the cafe blogging, drinking a cappucino, and waiting for my boy. the perfect prescription for "the morning after" my insane semester.

so glad i've had you all to join me for the ride. i like to think of you as my teammates in the gymnastics meet that is life.

gotta go...i'm up on vault.

i went to a hip hop class in the city on tuesday night.

it kind of rocked my world.

there are so many things that i feel passionate about in life...

but this is different.

this one class gave me such a rush, i could hardly handle it.

it was the whole thing- driving into the city. walking around a bit before class. going into this huge room and knowing no one. then learning a routine {to mr. timberlake...yesss.} and performing it. i honestly didn't know if i could do it- it has been entirely t o o l o n g since i've done this sort of thing. but you know what? i think i was kind of good. i mean, i didn't just keep up, but i even threw in some sass. anyway, it felt good.

so looking forward to the next class.

big, fat old testament exam this morning.

i started studying on monday {SO not like me}.

i woke up at 5:30 in the am, and made my way to starbucks to secure everything in my brain.

i fell down on the sidewalk outside. i guess my eyes were still adjusting to the early hour.

bff's response when i told her: "omg! was your computer ok?!" {we are so alike in this way of thinking...i stick my arm out to protect my computer when i have to slam on the brakes while driving}

this was my recap: "only my hand, my toe-nail polish, and my pride were hurt."

anyway, now for a visual on how i felt leaving the classroom post-exam...

WARNING: this is long. but i had an experience. and i make no excuses or apologies for it. read if you're willing.

Rumor had it, Tuesday would be rainy. I went to bed with a hope for sunshine, that I might have a chance at walking along the Golden Gate Bridge. At the sound of my 7:30 wake up call, I immediately rose to check the forecast:

light rain ending at 9:00, thunderstorms starting at 11:00.

This provided the perfect window of opportunity to head out on a little adventure. I arrived at the Marin Headlands in a lively pony-tail, ratty t-shirt, maroon shorts, leggings, and my sorry excuse for tennis shoes.

As I set out, the look of the bay and the sheer majesty of the bridge completely filled me- mind, heart, and soul. Passing signs sharing messages of "hope" and phone numbers of people you can talk to, I felt so relieved at the hope I have. Unfailing. Then my mind quickly wandered to the city standing before me. I saw the Marina, the Palace of Fine Arts, the Transamerica building. They beckoned. "Jordan, you know you want to. You're already on your way." It wasn't long before I embraced these ideas. I thought to myself, "you can just walk over to Crissy field, walk around, look and enjoy!" Excitement flowed wildly through my veins.

Suddenly, my body was taken over by a gust of wind so powerful, I quickly looked for something to hold onto. Not only this, but my face began to feel wet. As I approached the city, so close to the bridge's end, I squinted my eyes, in hopes of reading the clock above the center toll booth. "It can't be 11:00 already," I thought! The clock read 8:45. Dilemma. Do I risk it, and press on in my journey? Do I turn around? The wind began to pick up, and the rain was beginning to hurt. The humble drops I had prepared for now seemed to be tiny bullets being shot at my face.

I turned around, and began my journey home. I remember nothing of the bay or the majestic bridge on which I tread. Only the mighty wind and the numbing fear of the approaching storm. I passed others, who exchanged with me a glance that read, "Are we crazy??" "Perhaps," I thought. My brisk walk quickly turned to a run. I took off, trying so hard to remember my core and the form of my body- this was supposed to be an exercise after all. My mood was shot. Discouragement quickly set in. Disappointment flooded my mind at the thought of my failed plans. Little girl losing herself in a big city, yet again- this was not a dream easily repressed.

Then, out of nowhere, I noticed an altering shift in my surroundings. The sky turned to a perfect shade of blue, graced with white, cotton-like clouds, without being consumed. As the clouds parted, I lifted my hands of ice and removed my hood, only to see the mountains shining before me, basking in the glory of the sun. And I turned once more to look at my city, engulfed in shades of gray. "Another day," I said. This rain will end. And summer is on the horizon.

so it all started yesterday, when my bff asked me this one simple question:

"well...when was the last time you had sushi?"

i thought about it, and had trouble remembering.

this did not please me.

a few texts later, i had plans with a couple of my friends to meet up in the city for sushi. turns out our spot was closing just as we arrived, but they let us place a to go order, which we wound up eating in subway. random.

then we decided...we should probably karaoke. {duh!}

so we made our way over to the mint, and began deciding what we would be performing...

so many options.

but deep down, we all knew what we wanted had to sing.

sunday, after church, boy and i took the ferry into the city.

it was wonderful. i love the ferry. and i love the city.

bc it was such a dreary beautiful day, we decided to have lunch out on the deck at pier 23.

we prefer pier 23 for like a nighttime, somewhere fun to have a drink kind of experience.

but the sunshine and the bay were nice. and so was the company.

we then made our way to the crazy touristy part of the wharf.

and as we were walking we decided that the bay aquarium looked like it might be fun.

so we gave it a shot.

it was such a colorful experience.

the pink and orange guy in the bottom-left photo was my absolute favorite, boy liked the yellow guy behind dory.

don't worry: i definitely climbed onto the rocks, with all the other 6 year olds, to touch the starfish.

slimy, but worth it.

the entire day, from start to finish, was pretty much perfect. after being in class all day on saturday, this was such a nice way to make the most of my weekend. ...all this talk about the weekend is getting me anxious for the one to come!

hump day is so exciting, right? definitely my favorite in the monday through friday lull :)

ugh i'm only 23 and i already live for the weekends. frightening!

these two people are maybe the most ridiculously awkward people alive,

and they fall in love.

and it works.

i have some quirks.

i am becoming increasingly aware of them.

sometimes they frustrate the crap out of me,

and i know they frustrate the crap out of those close to me :)

but it's me.

i think jane austen was a genuis. and i'm pretty sure that she, too, captured this element of love so perfectly

when mr. knightley says to emma,

so, while i can't promise perfection, i can promise me. and all i want is you. and i think that this could work. just saying.

okay i've found a little inspiration these past few days...

it has come in many different forms, so i'm thinking that i will take the week to catch you up.

two thursdays ago, i got off work and realized that it would be a beautiful evening to try and catch the sunset.

so stella and i twisted around hilly, turny highway 1, and made it just in time for this delicious treat...

i was having one of those really lovely extreme girl moments...

so i turned my music up SUPER loud,

rolled the windows down,

and cried until there were no more tears.

by the time i got to the beach, all i could do was sit and enjoy.

it was completely perfect.

ps. i decided that i wouldn't let myself edit the photos {with the exception of a border, obviously}.

although i think that editing is usually necessary for a good shot, i really believe that there are some things that should simply remain untouched. God's sunset, on this particular day, was one such thing.

this morning i was having a conversation with a friend, and i felt like i was back in middle school again. after i hung up, i just saw myself as this dorky girl in the midst of all of puberty's glory. we're talking drew barrymore in never been kissed kind of behavior. i over-shared. i stumbled over my words. i think i seemed way more enthused than my friend. it was just weird.

and what really blows my mind is that i felt that way pretty much all day long.

i mean...what's with that?

anyway...crossing my fingers...

that this is just me being a girl,

that i am the only one pickin' up on the josie grossy behavior,

and that this feeling is gone when i wake up in the morning.

i guess the good news is that things worked out pretty well for her in the end. prom queen and she gets the boy. done deal.
